What to do in the Garden in November

November is a time to prepare the garden for winter while making plans for

the seasons ahead.

Clearing and pruning

With leaves falling rapidly, keep clearing them from lawns, paths and ponds to

prevent rot and improve drainage.

Cut back the last of the perennials, but leave some seed heads for wildlife.

Garden tools, pots and furniture should be cleaned and stored to prevent

damage from frost.

Planting and Bulbs

IThis is the perfect month to plant bare-root trees, shrubs and hedging, as well

as tulip bulbs for a vibrant spring display.

Plant Protection

Protect tender plants with fleece or mulch and move delicate potted plants to

sheltered spots or greenhouses.

Lawn Care

Lawns need minimal mowing now, but aerating the soil will improve drainage

before winter.

Composting

If you have a compost heap, turn it to speed up decomposition.

Wildlife in the Garden

Bird feeders and water sources should be set up to support wildlife as

temperatures drop.

November is also a great time to plan next year’s garden, browsing seed

catalogues and making planting lists for the coming spring.
