What to do in the Garden in October

October is a month of transition in the garden as autumn takes hold, making it

the perfect time for tidying, planting and preparing for the colder months

ahead.

Clearing and pruning

Clear fallen leaves from lawns and borders, adding them to a compost heap or

creating leaf mould (compost) for future soil enrichment. Cut back spent

perennials, but leave some seed heads for wildlife and winter interest.

Planting and Bulbs

Plant spring-flowering bulbs like tulips, alliums, and hyacinths, as well as hardy

shrubs and trees to establish strong roots before winter.

Lift and store tender plants such as dahlias and cannas before the first frosts

arrive. It's also a great time to divide and replant overcrowded perennials.

Plant Protection

Protect delicate plants with mulch or fleece, and clean out greenhouses, pots,

and tools to prevent pests and diseases.

Lawn Care

Lawns can be given a final mow and an autumn feed to strengthen them for

winter.

Composting

If you have a compost heap, turn it to speed up decomposition.

Wildlife in the Garden

Bird feeders and water sources should be set up to support wildlife as

temperatures drop.

October is also ideal for planting winter vegetables like garlic, onions and

broad beans, ensuring a productive start to next year’s growing season.
