What to do in the Garden in March

March is the perfect time to kick-start your garden for the growing season as

spring arrives.

Start by clearing away any winter debris, pruning dead or damaged branches

and preparing flower beds by adding compost or well-rotted manure.

Sowing and Bulbs

Early sowing of hardy vegetables like carrots, peas and lettuce can begin, while

summer-flowering bulbs such as lilies and gladioli should be planted.

Repotting Containers and Dividing Perrennials

It's also an excellent time to divide perennials, repot container plants and

begin feeding shrubs and roses with a balanced fertiliser. Remember to use a

potassium feed for your flowering plants as this encourages more flowers.

Eyes Open

Keep an eye out for emerging weeds and slugs and consider mulching beds to

retain moisture and suppress unwanted growth. Frosts will still be a risk,

protect tender plants with fleece or cloches.

With longer daylight hours and warming temperatures, March is a busy but

rewarding month for gardeners.
