What to do in the Garden in August

August is a peak summer month in the garden, with plenty of harvesting,

maintenance and planning to keep things looking their best.

Watering and Deadheading

Regular watering remains essential, especially for containers, hanging baskets,

and vegetable patches, as the heat can dry out the soil quickly. Deadheading

flowers like roses, dahlias, and petunias will encourage continued blooming

into early autumn.

Harvesting

It's also the perfect time to harvest crops such as tomatoes, beans, courgettes,

and sweetcorn while sowing fast-growing salad crops like lettuce and radishes

for a late-season yield.

Plant Pruning and Hedge Trimming

Prune summer-flowering shrubs once they’ve finished blooming and trim

hedges to keep them tidy.

Eyes Out

Keep an eye out for pests and diseases, particularly powdery mildew on plants

in dry conditions.

If you are planning for autumn, start thinking about ordering spring bulbs and preparing spaces for planting.

August is also a great time to collect seeds from favourite flowers to save for next year. With long, warm days, take time to relax and enjoy the garden at its peak.
